Mark Maassel, President
Mark Maassel brings a unique blend of electric utility executive leadership, engineering knowledge and a demonstrated commitment to civic engagement to the Indiana Energy Association (IEA) in his position as president. Maassel has devoted his career to help ensure that Hoosiers enjoy access to affordable and reliable energy for their homes and businesses.
“Indiana Energy Association member companies are committed to the customers they serve,” says Maassel, “just as the Indiana Energy Association is focused on securing policies that enhance our members’ ability to deliver affordable, reliable and increasingly cleaner energy to all Hoosiers.”
Maassel has served as President and CEO of the regional business membership economic development organization, Northwest Indiana Forum, and has held multiple senior level leadership positions at the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), including serving as president. His prior leadership roles in the energy industry include membership on the Gas Technology Institute Board of Directors, Edison Electric Institute Board of Directors and participation on various American Gas Association committees. Maassel has also served as Of Counsel for the law firm of Krieg DeVault.
With a dedication to civic involvement, Maassel has held multiple community leadership positions, including chair for the 2008 United Way of Porter County Campaign, Chair of the Porter County Community Foundation, President of the Crisis Center Board of Directors, and Board president of the Valparaiso Community Schools. In 2008 he was selected for the inaugural class of the Northwest Indiana Business Hall of Fame and received a “Sagamore of the Wabash” award from Governor Mitch Daniels.
Maassel holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota, along with a juris doctorate from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Tim Rushenberg, Vice President
Tim Rushenberg is Vice President of the Indiana Energy Association. Tim has served in many leadership and executive positions in the private sector, state government, and the U.S. military.
Prior to joining the IEA, Tim was Vice President of Governmental Affairs & Tax Policy for the Indiana Manufacturers Association where he led their lobbying efforts at the Indiana Statehouse. In 2014, he was awarded the Champion of Small Business Award by the National Coalition for Capital for demonstrating leadership in supporting policies and initiatives designed to promote access to capital for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Before joining the IMA, Tim was president of SRI, Inc., an Indianapolis-based company that provides technology solutions for liquidating real property and collecting delinquent taxes on behalf of over 90 county governments in four states.
Prior to SRI, Tim was General Counsel and Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance under former Governor Mitch Daniels. At DLGF, Tim ensured the timeliness of the state’s property tax billing process and revised the real and personal property assessment regulations. In recognition of his success as commissioner, the Indiana County Auditors Association awarded him their Leadership Award in 2010.
Tim served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps performing several duties, including as a military prosecutor and defense counsel, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona and Minot Air Force Base in Minot, North Dakota. Tim was selected by his peers as a Most Outstanding Contributor and is a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
Tim is a Six Sigma Green Belt and has used those improvement tools to modernize antiquated government systems and propel business development efforts in public and private enterprises. He has published several articles for the American Bar Association and other organizations on topics as diverse as taxes, HIPAA, and international law.
Tim received a B.A. in Political Science from Indiana University South Bend and a Juris Doctor, Law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. Tim is a native of Elkhart and currently resides in Brownsburg with his wife Kristin and their eight children.
Edwin J. Simcox, President Emeritus
Edwin J. Simcox (Ed) was born on January 12, 1945, in LaPorte, Indiana. He holds an A.B. degree in Government and Economics from Indiana University and obtained a J.D. degree from Indiana University Law School.
In December 1986, Ed Simcox was named President of the Indiana Electric Association, a trade association representing Indiana's investor-owned electric utilities. On March 1, 2004, the Electric Association merged with the Indiana Gas Association to form the Indiana Energy Association. Ed was elected President of the new association.
Ed’s experience in government service includes employment in the Corporations Division of the Indiana Secretary of State's office, Secretary of the State Highway Commission, Secretary of the Indiana Public Service Commission, legal deputy of the office of the Reporter of the Indiana Supreme Court and eight years as Indiana's Secretary of State.
